Scholars Lecture Series

On Monday, Jan. 29th, Mariamante hosted its first speaker in its Scholars Lecture Series. Mr. Anthony Williams, American historian and research fellow at Rockefeller Library in colonial Williamsburg, gave a presentation to students and staff entitled, "A Theological and Constitutional Critique of Roe v. Wade".

His lecture's main theme involved events in American judicial court history highlighting the progression of 18th and 19th century slavery, its defeat, and the parallel issue of abortion-on-demand. In his remarks he linked the perceived 'right to privacy' claim written to originally support the existence of slavery in America, with the use of the same claim by the Blackmun court in 1973 to write a decision supporting abortion-on-demand in Roe v. Wade.

The Academy will host its second Scholars Lecture Series speaker on February 20th in Assembly Hall. Rev. Mr. Robert Lyons, deacon at St. Mary's Church in Fredericksburg, will present "The Meaning of Vocation". The Lecture Series is free and open to the public.
